Reading is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2713445\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the most valuable skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed during childhood, but it\u2019s also one of the most cognitively challenging to acquire (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2713445\/#R38\"rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyon, 1998 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common misconception is that reading\u2019s a \u201cnatural\u201d process, like breathing or speaking. Humans are born with the potential to learn language, but our brains are <\/span><b>not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hardwired for learning to read. Reading is based on a written language system, which we humans created. It\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ascd.org\/el\/articles\/why-reading-is-not-a-natural-process\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not a process of evolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 It\u2019s a process that needs to be systematically taught.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ve been speaking to each other for up to 2 million years, but<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.captivoice.com\/capti-site\/public\/entry\/capti_assess_insights_speaking_is\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the alphabet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is only 3,000 or so years old! When we speak to each other, the individual sounds aren\u2019t usually heard by the listener. Most of us don\u2019t \u201cnaturally\u201d know that words are made up of smaller sound units.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without instruction, most people can\u2019t make the connections between the smallest units of speech sounds.\u00a0 And without the ability to recognize each speech sound, learning the alphabet, words, and sentences is much more difficult.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f78acc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2f78acc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. Developing reading skills is cognitively complex<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acf4045 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"acf4045\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading isn\u2019t just about letters and words. It involves complex cognitive processes. In order to successfully learn to read,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mybrainware.com\/blog\/brainware-safari-cognitive-skills-development-and-learning-to-read\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kids need to develop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cognitive skills that support decoding and comprehension.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are processes that need to be explicitly taught, since they aren\u2019t innate abilities. And they need to be taught until these processes become automatic.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decoding involves the ability to translate print into speech. It enables kids to quickly match letters or letter combinations to recognize patterns that make syllables and words.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This helps them blend those sounds into words. And it\u2019s fundamental to helping kids learn to read fluently and comprehend what they\u2019re reading. Two of the cognitive processes needed for kids to become great decoders include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentachievementsolutions.com\/connecting-cognitive-processes-and-reading-comprehension\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phonological awareness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the ability to recognize and manipulate spoken parts of words and sentences &#8211; think \u201cears\u201d only) and<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phonics (making the connection between sound and print &#8211; think \u201cears\u201d AND \u201ceyes\u201d)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comprehension skills help kids understand what they\u2019re reading. These include metacognition, graphic and semantic organizers (like story maps or Venn-Diagrams), answering questions, recognizing structure and summarizing.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/260411126_A_Cognitive_View_of_Reading_Comprehension_Implications_for_Reading_Difficulties\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two main categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of reading comprehension:<\/span>\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower level processes (being able to translate written words into meaningful language)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher level processes (combining these units into coherent mental models).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-819d030 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"819d030\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. One study on<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecf.org\/resources\/early-warning-confirmed\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early reading proficiency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that kids with the lowest reading scores account for 33% of all students, but they account for 63% of those who don\u2019t end up graduating.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skills gained from early reading proficiency that increase their overall academic success include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They both rely on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golexic.com\/blog\/speaking-and-reading-skills-how-strong-oral-language-skills-set-the-stage-for-reading-success\/\">many of the same skills<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0like vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and phonological awareness (being able to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds).<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/cdr\/2012\/602807\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study on language and reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that in various countries when parents read to their kids from an early age it enhances language acquisition and improves their early reading success.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, according to a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8744843\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study there\u2019s \u201ca positive link between parents\u2019 involvement in home literacy practices, and children\u2019s later language and literacy skills.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, parents who use language-rich activities, like conversation, storytelling and word games give their kids a big leg up. <\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kids who have stronger language skills end up being better readers, communicators and learners overall.<\/span>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3561f73 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3561f73\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5. Research shows that much like oral language skills, there\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6071423\/\"rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection between social skills and reading<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading gives kids ideas and topics that don\u2019t come up in everyday conversation. Since kids are naturally curious, these ideas motivate them to ask more questions and share these new ideas with their peers.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different books provide characters who face situations and challenges. When kids relate to characters, it encourages them to think about how they might handle something similar in their own lives.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents and teachers can use various books to introduce kids to all kinds of places, cultures, and socio-economic situations. This fosters open-mindedness and acceptance towards people from various backgrounds.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Group reading, book clubs, or class discussions require collaboration and participation.
